World Cup threatsAl-Qaeda has not had a big score since 9/11. But now a decade has gone by and what better way of placing themselves back on the front page of every newspaper and news channel around the world than by causing chaos during the World Cup. Our seemingly complacent attitude to this very possible event should be of concern to every clear thinking resident of this country. Is our secret service up to the task of ensuring absolute safety at our borders for the tens of thousands of visitors who will be flocking to our country? Will our stadiums be thoroughly checked for destructive devices before each and every game? Will our airport security be tight enough to put us on a par with American and British airports? Does the term “red alert” mean anything to those who run this country’s security services, or are we living in a fool’s paradise, thinking that it cannot happen to us? Al-Qaeda is a ruthless fundamentalist organisation that lives for the obliteration of western religion and culture, so why should South Africa be spared? PETER BACHTIS By e-mail |
